Routine eye examinations are no longer covered by the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP). However, some age groups, and those with certain medical conditions, still have full or partial coverage. Here's how it works:
|Age||Exam Fee||MSP Coverage||Patient Fee|
|0 - 18||$58||full||$0
(difference between fee & amount MSP pays is waived)
|19 - 64||$98||none||$98|
|65 and older||$98||partial||$52|
|19 and older with coverage through:
|19 and older with covered ocular or medical condition*||$98||partial||$52|
...as well as several others. If you have a medical condition and would like to know if you qualify for partial MSP coverage, please ask the staff when you phone to make an appointment, or ask the Doctor at the time of your eye examination.
In addition, many extended health care plans provide coverage for eye examinations.
These appointments are partially covered by MSP. In most cases, the fee to the patient is $30.
Pre-operative examination: $98
Post-operative examinations: $70 for each of 5 post-op appointments, scheduled at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year after surgery.
If this test is required, it is fully covered by MSP.
